During Labor Pain Relief Becomes Top Priority!

Basic Labor Pain Relief Options
What kind of labor pain relief is available? Which ones are safe? Which ones are effective? Which ones will you choose? Today, there are all sorts of medical pain relief options available to women. But if you are wise, you will not enter labor with medicated pain relief as your only option! What happens when the options you had counted on (like an epidural or other medications)are suddenly not available? It happens- ask around. So, now what do you do?

Natural Relief
Natural labor pain relief is for every woman, not just for those having a natural labor. The more you can learn about your body and train yourself in relaxation and control, the better off you will be. Think of it as a magician with a bag of magic tricks: the more tips and techniques for labor pain relief you have in your bag, the better prepared and more confident you will be! Your chances of having a good childbirth experience get better and better with each trick in the bag!

Pain relief for your labor begins in your mind. You must learn how to control your mind and use it to your advantage. Start with some simple mind building and meditation exercises. Don't let the word "meditation" throw you off. This is not hard core meditation. These are simple and enjoyable exercises that allow you to sit down and relax for a few minutes. Take advantage of it! After all, one must prepare for labor!

When you have read the section on how to prepare your mind and can handle some simple meditation exercises move on to slightly more advanced exercises. Childbirth relaxation techniques teach your mind and body to work together, to respond to each other. They teach you how to direct these responses. Three techniques to use are attention focusing, neuromuscular disassociation, and imagery. As you learn to use each of these effectively your control and confidence in each will grow.

Don't Forget To Breathe!
An important part of labor pain relief is learning to breathe properly. Can you relax if you are hyperventilating? Not a chance! Think about it- if someone is stressed out, what is one of their first dead give-aways? Their breathing! It is usually short and quick. On the other hand, when someone is calm and relaxed their breathing is slow and deep. Any thoughts? To remain calm and relaxed during labor, and subsequently be in less pain, you must be able to maintain control over your breathing. Using childbirth breathing techniques will help you maintain slow and controlled breathing. (And I am not talking about HOOO, HOOO, HEEE, HEEE!)

Extra Tips and Tricks
What about in the middle of labor? Is there anything else you can do to relieve pain? All the training in the world is useless if you forget to use it when it counts. Try these little tips and tricks from the delivery room that have successfully helped women to maintain, and sometimes regain, focus.

Is there such thing as a "Pain Free" Birth?
A pain free birth is only attained one of two ways that I know of. One way is to be completely sedated: out cold. Not an ideal choice in my opinion. The other is through belief and training. This type of training can be found in training for unassisted childbirth. Women who train to give birth unassisted have a deep and solid understanding of childbirth. It is through this type of training that many have experienced birth "pain free". It is quite interesting. I am not an authority yet, but am avidly studying as I prepare for my next birth.
