Knowledge is what makes the difference. In times past, knowledge about pregnancy and childbirth were usually limited to stories, tales, and personal experience. Information was very localized. It came from the people immediately around you.

Now we live in a day when information is available right at our fingertips! It is shared throughout the world by books, TV, internet, and more. As we share our experiences and knowledge, childbirth becomes less strange and more familiar. We can gain hope, encouragement, and confidence. We can share and talk about our fears and concerns. Together we are making the most of our childbirth experiences.

Medical advances are at their best. Prenatal care helps to catch potential problems before they become a problem. Doctors are able to offer a variety of life saving procedures. Hospitals and birthing centers are becoming more family friendly every day. Labor can be done in these facilities naturally and safely and “just in case”, help is still there if you need it.

Women are living in better circumstances today then in times past. Most are better nourished, not as overworked(though I know many who would object to that statement), and most have the basic necessities of life available.
