Making Decisions About Your Childbirth Options...
Giving birth is not complicated, but with all of the childbirth options available today, it can seem a little overwhelming.
Keep it simple. Understand what is available and make decisions before you go into labor. This will keep your stress
level down and help you to have a calmer, easier labor.
Vaginal or Surgical Delivery?
In times past the only choice available was vaginal childbirth. By far, the majority of all births today are still vaginal
deliveries. A c-section was reserved only for an emergency. But today there are a few women who elect, or choose, to give birth
by cesarean. In America, the number of c-sections has risen to include almost 25 percent of all births. Don't be afraid. Your
body is designed to give birth. With the childbirth options available today, surgery is not necessary. A healthy, normal and safe
birth can be achieved by most women through a vaginal delivery.
Getting Labor Started...
When the time comes for labor to begin, will you let labor start naturally or will you consider an induction. Childbirth
induction is used to either start your labor or to speed up a sluggish labor. It should only be used if it is necessary
because there are certain risks.

Getting Baby Out!
When pushing your baby out, sometimes it is difficult to get the baby through the last step. This is most likely because mom
can't relax enough to let the baby through. To help, an episiotomy can be performed to enlarge the opening and the baby will
usually slide right out. Using an episiotomy is usually decided at the time of pushing. Will you want an episiotomy? If you
definitely do not want one, let your practitioner know ahead of time!
