Childbirth Education
Childbirth Education is about getting you ready to give birth.
Why Educate?
-Education means less problems and less surprises.
-Education enables you to be actively involved in your birth and confident about the choices being made.
-Education promotes a more relaxed mother and an easier labor and delivery!
Educate- Then Make Decisions
Educate yourself first before you begin making decisions about your birth. Explore all of your options. Before deciding you could never bear the pain of a natural childbirth see what others are doing to overcome it. Before you elect to have a c-section, understand all of the risks. If something were to not go as planned during your birth, understand your options so that you are not at the mercy of "standard procedure." Be informed to make better decisions.
Self-Education
We promote self-education. Educating yourself means you are able to avoid, or at least put into proper perspective, other people’s opinions and biased advice. There are benefits and risks to every method, drug, and procedure. Only self education will give you a well rounded picture where you can make good decisions.
Childbirth education classes and books are good resources for information, but always take into account the background and purpose of each program. For example: with hospital classes, the general childbirth information kind, they tend to be geared to informing you about the hospital procedures and what they expect. Almost a "this is how we run things" kind of approach. So if you are wanting a natural birth, this would be a good class but you would still want to keep looking for a class geared toward natural birth.
Big Picture:
Don't ask advice on how to become rich from a poor person.
In other words, in the end, make sure that however you decide to give birth, make sure you talk to others who have accomplished what you seek to accomplish- not just "tried."
Here are a few foundational ideas to begin your childbirth education:
Understand: Your Body is Designed to Give Birth
The first thing you must understand is that giving birth is a normal, natural function of your body. It is not abnormal.
Develop An Appreciation for your Amazing Reproductive System
Back in health class you probably learned a few basics facts about your reproductive system. Even though that was enough to get you by back then,
now you need to know a lot more! Becoming pregnant is one thing, getting the baby out is a whole new ball field.
Good news!
Your body is not only designed to create a baby, it is also designed to give birth to one, beautifully and naturally.
Each organ of your reproductive system was designed with giving birth in mind. Each step of the birthing process is important
for your baby.
Your uterus is designed to house and grow your baby. When the time comes, the uterus opens and pushes your baby out. Your cervix
stays tightly closed until the time is right and then opens in a matter of hours allowing your baby to pass through into the
birthing canal. Your vagina, amazingly elastic, allows your watermelon baby to pass through, squeezing the amniotic fluid out of
babies lungs in preparation for the air waiting just outside. This is not chance! This is design.
Now keep educating...
